Do I need to be an Artist to engage in Art Therapy?
  • No you don't, no experience of Art Making is needed to engage in Art Therapy
  • Art Therapy is not like an Art Lesson, although you may end up increasing your skills & confidence just through participating.
  • The process is more important than the finished product in Art Therapy. Unlike in an Art Lesson there is no wrong creation in Art Therapy, no scoring, no judgement -  just expressive creation in order for you to have a visual voice and gain insight, meaning and release.
  • The Art Therapist's training supports facilitation of your creative expression as well as importantly, facilitating your verbal exploration of what you have created. This verbal facilitation assists you in gaining insight & understanding. Engaging in Art Therapy can help to make the "unconscious" i.e. what is in your unconscious mind that perhaps you couldn't gain access to or didn't have words for, to move into your conscious mind -  so you can can gain access & work towards a better understanding of what might be happening for you.
